Analysing Mizz Contents Page

I have chosen to analyse a contents page from Mizz magazine as Top Of The Pops magazine does not have a contents page.

The title of the page has been put in a sans serif font and in bold. It has also been put in red against a white background and the boldness and the red makes it stand out. However the title of the page hasn't been made very big and has been put off centre so it isn't very clear where the title is.

The rest of the font on the page has also been written using a sans serif font. The writing is small and hard to read but then there is not a lot of it which makes it easier to read.

The use of colour on this page are all different colours but they are all bright colours. Bright colours are associated with the younger audience and so that is why bright colours have been chosen.

The use of language on this page is more informal than formal. It uses informal language such as 'Caught Out!' and ' Bag a Bargin' to try to communicate with the younger audience. The language used have also got catchy titles that will stick in people's head. The younger audience generally use abbreviations and catchy saying which is why they have used them for this type of magazine.

The target audience for this magazine is young females based on the pictures, language and colour. Older females wouldn't generally buy a magazine based on the use of bright colour and with pictures of Disney stars on the page.

The images on this page are mainly Disney stars from the Disney film 'High School Musical'. The picture is of Zac Efron who is a member of the cast. He will help sell issues as he is a love interest to some females. The photo is a live photo taken at something like the premier of a film. The star is an internationally known star which helps to sell issues as more people know who he is. Another image on the page is of a model modelling clothes. This will help sell issues to young females as young females are just coming into that stage where they are interested in clothes.

The main sells on this page are all the titles of the articles. They have been placed under specific headings which make it easier to read and have been coloured coded which makes it easier to follow. It also draws people to that part and makes them want to read on.

This magazine had 66 pages. The issue cost £2.10 which I think is a bit over priced for this magazine. This magazine is bought by younger females and should be pocket money price so younger females can buy it.

There are not any main flashes on this page, just main sells.

Analysing Smash Hits Magazine Cover

I have chosen to analyse a Smash Hits cover from 2006 as this magazine no longer exists. I was unable to find another pop music magazine which is why I am analysing one from 2006.

The title of this magazine has been written in a sans serif and has been made to look like a sticker. I think they have called this magazine 'Smash Hits' because they only include smash hit records and interviews with smash hit artists. An exclamation mark has also been added to the end which makes the magazine sound exciting. The title font has also been written in two different colours, a lighter pink and a darker pink. Around the edge of the writing there is a thick white outline which is what makes the title look like a sticker.

The font used for the main sells are very simple fonts and don't stand out as much as the main flash. The main flash has been made bigger and the colour is the same as the magazine title. The main sells have been made using other colours that don't stand out as much.

The colours used for the background are very girlie colours like different shades of pink which have been used to help show that this magazine is aimed at females. They have also used colours that make the other colours stand out. For example, yellow and black.

The use of language on this front cover is formal but at the same time informal. The way in which the language has been written is formal as there are no puns or no abbreviations however the choice of language is informal as they have used words like 'mental'.

The target audience for this magazine is young females as the colours, writing and stories are all stories and stories that only young girls would enjoy to read. The image is of Preston from Ordinary Boys and the writing has been written in pink which suggests a love interest in Preston. There are also fashion tips and what the celebrities are wearing which is only what females are really interested in.

The image is of Preston from Ordinary Boys and the writing linked to his story is in pink which suggests a love interest in him. I think they have chosen this person to put on their front cover because in 2006, Preston's relationship with Chantelle progressed and they got married. Also because Preston was in a successful band and people want to know about people in successful bands. The image is a posed image which helps with the love interest as it means that Preston is not in some awkward pose that makes him look unattractive. He is in a pose that he is comfortable in and means that he is able to look his best. Preston is usually a female cover star as he is a male from a boy band and a boy band that appeal mainly to females.

The main sells have been made large enough so that they stand out. They stand out however they are clear that they are not the main story. This is to attract people to the magazine and make them pick up the magazine and read the stories on the front cover.

The information presented on this front cover is the bar code, the issue number and the date the issue was released. Another piece of information presented is up in the left hand corner which says 'New Look!'. This is showing that the magazine has changed its look to keep people interested in the magazine.

The main flash is an interview with Preston from Ordinary Boys. This will help to sell the magazine because young girls may want to read what Preston has to say as they have a love interest in him.

Analysing Top Of The Pops Double Page Spread

This double page spread doesn't have a main title but has many different story titles. For example, one story title reads 'Troy & Gabriella SPLIT?' This title is in sans serif font and there are two different colours used. 'Troy & Gabriella' has been put into dark pink against a light pink background. This stands out but not as much as the word 'Split' as it has been put in white against the light pink background. 'Split' has also been made bigger than the other words as this is the main word which will draw people in as people will want to know who has split. Another story title reads 'Slippery Customers' which has been put in a sans serif font. The colours are again different as 'Slippery' is in white and 'Customers' is in yellow. This makes 'Slippery' stand out and makes people wonder what is so slippery.

The language used is made up of abbreviations and puns. For example, Rihanna has been shortened to Rih and a story title reads 'Close Shave'. This is to make the magazine more fun and interesting for the younger audience.

The target audience for this is still young females based on the colours, language and images used. The images are of successful celebrities who may interest some people and make people want to read about them. The images used are celebrities in their everyday lives. Unlike the front cover of the magazine, the celebrities are not posing. They are in their everyday lives and may not even be aware of the fact they are being photographed.

The images used have been chosen as they are images that show that celebrities have lives past their careers. They also show the celebrities doing embarrassing things. For example, Rihanna is squeezing Chris Browns spot in one image. This is an image that these celebrities don't want shown however they are good selling points for magazines. These images could be used in either male magazines or female magazines as they are of both female and male celebrities however these particular images would usually be used in a female magazine based mainly what the images shoe.

The information presented on this double page spread shows the website again to promote the website and make people want to go on it by constantly printing it on most pages. The pages also show an Elliot Minor concert dates which has been put in there to advertise the concert tours.

The main flash of this double page spread are 'Troy & Gabriella Split?' and 'Slippery Customers'. These two stories are mainly information about the images. They are not articles or interviews but they are information about an upcoming film and a new celebrity couple and what they get up to.

These two pages work well as a double page spread due to the big pink band across the two of the pages which join them together as a double page spread. Another reason they work well is due to the sizing of the images. One page has smaller images with a few with more than one story on while the other has one story to focus on.

Analysing Top Of The Pops Magazine Cover

When looking at this magazine cover, I notice that the masthead of the magazine is hidden but not hidden so that I cannot read the title. The title of the magazine, 'Top Of The Pops', is in a sans serif font and in a bright colour. It is in pink with a blue background which makes the title of the magazine stand out. The writing is also bubble like which suggests a younger audience. I think they have given the magazine the title of 'Top Of The Pops' because the television show was a huge hit so they decided to continue on with a magazine version of the show.

The use of font on this front cover has all been written in sans serif font and a variety of colours have been used to attract people. Some of the font has been written with exclamation marks which brings excitement to the way in which it is said. Some font has also been written bubble like which is a font mainly associated with young females as the writing flows.

I think the use of colour has been chosen as they are colours mainly associated with the younger audience as they are bright colours. These colours also suggest that the magazine is aimed at young females as the colours are light pink, light blue and yellow. These colours are colours that you would expect to find on things associated with females and not males.

The language used is mainly informal as they use abbreviations such as 'omg'. They have done this because the magazine is aimed at younger females who tend to use abbreviations such as 'omg'. The font style used for the writing is all sans serif and are all in different colours to make the writing stand out from the rest.

The target audience for this magazine is females aged 11 and under as the writing, images and colour used are very feminine. The image is of The Jonas Brothers with hearts around them which help to suggest the magazine is aimed at females as The Jonas Brothers are a boy band for young females. According to NRS, 116,000 women read Top Of The Pops and 66,000 men read Top Of The Pops. This proves that more women read Top Of The Pops.

The main image of The Jonas Brothers have been chosen as they are a successful boy band who have won over the hearts of the young female audience. The magazine thinks that by putting a successful boy band on the front cover of the magazine will help sales. The image of The Jonas Brothers is usually a female cover star as they are a boy band aimed at young females. If they were put on the front cover of a male magazine then boys would be less likely to buy the magazine. Also, The Jonas Brothers are famous internationally so by putting them on the front cover of the magazine, more copies will be sold all over the world. This image of The Jonas Brothers has been placed in the centre of the page and has been made larger than the other images as it is the main item in the magazine and the magazine wants all the focus to be on that image.

The main sells are all the other articles around the main flash. These have been made smaller and are the stories that won't interest people as much as the main flash will. However they are interesting stories that will help sell the magazine. The stories have also been accompanied with a small picture so that people are aware of who 'Zac' is when the main sell only reads '24 hours with Zac!'

The main information presented are the magazine website to promote the website and the logo of the company that created the original show and the magazine. This is advertising the company and promoting what they can do and produce. The price of the magazine, £2.20, is shown. a bar code is shown and the date of the issue. There are also 43 pages in this magazine which means that this magazine is quite large for a pop music magazine.

On the front cover of Top Of The Pops, the main flash reads 'Omg! It's The Jonas Brothers! Why the Camp Rock boys are ready to date you!' This type of story is either an interview or an article from what The Jonas Brothers have said about why they are ready to date you. This will help to sell the magazine as young females will want to read about their favourite bands dating.
